What is Kirtan?

Kirtan, or devotional chanting, also known as Sankirtan, is an ancient musical art from India.  It is a form of bhakti yoga and is one of the surest ways to connect with Cosmic Consciousness or God in any religion.  Kirtan opens the heart chakra and joins in a mood, which gives way to enlightenment.  Kirtan allows us to open up and peel away the many layers of ourselves much like an onion.  When sung with an open heart, it quickly puts one into a joyful spirit.  Kirtan is not concerned with the technical aspect of singing, one simply sings from the heart.  It uplifts the singer and inspires the yogi within.  It prepares us for meditation, and even after singing kirtan, we continue to vibrate inwardly just as we did outwardly while singing.  There are many different styles of singing kirtan, and those singing are inspired by the continuous chanting of the holy names of God, who's love is lying dormant within us and then is awakened.  Kirtan is usually chanted in a call and response format where the lead singer sings a phrase and the group sings it back over again.  This can sometimes lead to a building of energy that is ecstatic, where the minds are stilled but our hearts start to soar. By singing the melodies of kirtan, we are at one with the Divine Presence at all times.

Rahul and Friends
                   In Memory of Rahul Sariputra

This page is also dedicated to my dear friend Rahul, affectionately known as Rahul Sariputra (a.k.a. Sakyaputra).  His talents speak for themselves; Rahul was a renowned sitarist.  In his youth he studied with Baba Allauddin Khan, the greatest musician and preceptor of this century.  He has traveled over the globe and has played for many eminent audiences, which include His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and many Hollywood celebrities.  His credits include film scores and having played with the music industries finest.  Aside from his solo projects, his recordings include collaborations with tabla masters Zakir Hussein, Pranesh Khan, and Ron Wagner, shakuhachi master Masayuki Koga, Ryugen Watanabe on synthesizers, Patrick Moraze of the Moody Blues, and German pop star Christian Anders. Rahul was also an extremely gifted painter depicting Buddhist themes and stories from the Dhamapada in watercolor.  Rahul was a staunch devotee of Lord Buddha.

As a person and fellow human being, I can attest that Rahul was truly kind and compassionate.  He had a great interest and concern on many moral issues and was a champion of the disadvantaged.  He was both a friend and music/spiritual teacher.  His students will remember his constant jam sessions and playing concerts with him on occasion.  He was most gracious and touched our lives.  We will dearly miss him.  Our blessings go to his family.
