Sound is vibration. Different kinds of sound send
out different rates of vibration, each having its own effect on its surroundings. The
vibrations of sound are comparable to rippled on the water which have been produced by a motion. As sound can affect water in a glass, it can also affect the subconscious mind. Mantra is a Sanskrit word having more than one meaning. tool of the mind is one of them. Mantras
are also commonly called words of power, or Sanskrit spiritual formula. The repetition of a Mantra is called Japa Yoga.
Repetition of a Mantra gradually awakens the higher facility in us and it can be practiced by verbal, whispered or
mental recitation. The mental repetition
can be altered with verbal repetition to keep the mind from wandering. But Mantras
are not just mechanically repeated sounds, but also establish meditation, which
are their true power.
When chanting a Mantra, it allows one to get in touch with the self and brings release from emotional
imbalance. Mantras bring the mind into a more Satvic or pure state by giving clarity of mind. Mantras are effective
for balancing the three Doshas, Vata, Pitta and Kapha, the biological humors or
primary life-forces in the body which are the most important principles in Ayurvedic thought and practice. Mantra Yoga is an important tool which can be used to direct Prana,
the vital breath in the body which energizes the tissues and the Chakras. Ayurveda uses Mantras for self-healing and can be used by the healer to energize the
healing process. In yoga psychology Mantras are used to correct psychological
and psychic disorders, seen as an imbalance of energy in the mind and by correcting these imbalances, it will bring the mind
and body to a place of health and harmony.
There are many Mantras for many different purposes and we will be exploring a few to create an
atmosphere of health and healing of the subtle body which in turn cleanses the causal body or samskaric field of the soul, defined as potentialities or tendencies and latent states which exist in the subconscious and unconscious areas of the mind, to alter subconscious habits and afflictions.
