What is Vedic Astrology?
In the West, Vedic astrology is called Siderial
astrology, but in India it is referred to as Vedic or Hindu astrology or Jyotish, which literally means inner light. The true meaning of astrology is "Message of the Stars". It is a very ancient knowledge compiled by the sages who lived in the Himalayan Mountains of India approximately
6,000 years ago. Jyotish is a noble science as old as the ages of the Vedas. By using the principles of astrology depending on the position of the planets ascertained
astronomically, one could forecast events for the benefit of all. It is a useful
science for interpreting nature.
Jyotish is based on correct astronomy. The astrologer will relate whatever law of nature s/he discovers in a chart by knowing
what is in the sky. As above, so below.
Later on in history, because of self-interest, some astrologers created other kinds of astrology based on stronger
symbolism and psychoanalysis, but were deficient when it came to actual prediction.
The tropical system or Western astrology, is derived from these other kinds of astrology, it is not based on what you
actually see in the sky.
Jyotish gives more relevance to the Rising sign
called the Ascendant, and the Moon sign in a persons chart as opposed to the Sun sign in Western astrology. It is unreasonable to believe that one planed can give a good scope to every aspect in ones life. The concept of monthly astrology column predictions, which appear in the newspapers
and magazines based on the Sun sign is not a concept incorporated in Jyotish. All
aspects of a persons chart must be considered to give a full spectrum of a horoscope.
Vedic astrology also encompasses a 120-year
Dasa or time periods that shows when ones life is under favorable or not so favorable influence. To be forewarned is to be forearmed, and Vedic astrology has the advantage of prescribing antidotes or
remedial measures called Yagyas, like chanting mantras or astrological gemstones to strengthen and give relief for
the ill effects of planets. Practicing Sadhana or doing spiritual practices such as yoga and meditation is one of the
most important aspects of ones elevation of consciousness and well-being.
The aim is to give you more accurate information
and to enlighten readers to a better understanding of Jyotish, and make it more accessible to the general population as a
useful service to one and all, and shed truth into the prevailing darkness that exists.
